Miata door mirror installation
Miata Mirror Lights. Installation Guide by Wilson Steele. I wanted to do a slick and stock looking installation, and I think the end product came out really well. And I wired properly, as described below, so that the multi position switch works for each passenger as well. Just getting into and out of the car is better too.
First off, go to Autozone with the follow list:. I only wanted light to come out of the bottom of the housing, so I masked off everything but one side with tape. Painted it bumper chrome twice, and then flat black twice, and when they were installed, light still shone through a little. So paint the heck out of them, the little 10 bulbs put out some photons. And while I had the paint cans out, I decided to paint the stock panel lights as well, which came out very well.
Mirror Removal. There is one screw in the back of your mirror which is easy to access if you swivel it around to face forward.
It takes a gentle hand and a bit of force to pop the glass out, but it can be done. The glass is pressed against the rear ribs in the plastic by an outer lip all the way around, but none of that comes apart. Then repeated with several handy razor blades many times down the side till the whole bottom edge popped out. It helps a little to convince one side to come out as well, meaning start at a corner and work around to the diagonal corner.
Putting the lights on is very easy, as they came with their hard ware. Each light required three holes, two for screws, and then one in the center for the wiring. Another large whole was require near the center of the mirror to allow 3 18ga wires to exit in an ordered fashion. Mounting 2. Pull the wires cleanly through the center whole made for each housing, and screw down the lights.
Wiring Part 1 — The Easy Stuff. Inside the mirror, we want to run 1 power red and 2 grounds black. Each mirror light, or map light from now on, will be activate either by the door switches together , or by the panel light switch separately. The panel mirrors have power before the switch, and the switch operates which ground they go to.
Which makes our life a little easier than a switched power system. Wiring diagram at end of tech article. So, with four wires there on your lights, elect two to be hot, and two to be ground. The hot ones will always have power, and they will share it. The two grounds will each have a separate wire, which will go to the back of each panel switch.

Installation of this product is relatively simple. Mounts to stock mirror location. However, I sits at least 1. The mirror seems very close to the driver. The mirror lights the interior very well. After driving around with it installed in car I realized I did not like the location of the mirror. The light it emits at night is excellent. I called MM MArketing and they said they would send me the glue mounted tab to the windshield for free.
But I did not want to glue it to the window. They exchanged the mirror for the Interior light kit that fits in the footwells. Rear view mirror with individual lights for the passenger and drivers side. Can turn on in any ignition position but cannot turn off while either door is open. Was surprised it was a complete plug and play unit and under 15 minutes to install.
Tried it for first time tonight. Plenty of light for easy map reading and did not reflect into eyes or cause glare on windshield. Never thought about getting one before but knocked my stock one off last week and cracked it. Was after thought while chatting with Dealer Alternative so ordered one from them. Have already modified it. Didn't like the light coming on when opening doors so since was 3 wire hook up, located the offending wire with volt meter and snipped the wire.
That problem solved! Did not like the newer forward location or like the stock location either because of the roll bar. Had a windsheild tab laying around so glued it on at the location I wanted the mirror mounted. Another problem solved. The supplied mounting bracket covers the existing hole nicely and a bit of magic marker hides the brass screws.
Since already have dedicated power line for radar detector under frame molding to that location will just modify stock mirror bracket to just hold radar detector. Only other thing planned in the next few days is remove the plug that shows under the molding and hard wire it so is nearly invisible.
Not sure why wasted so many years by not putting one of therse on my '90! Mirror is slightly larger than stock, but does not interfer with my 95's sun visor. It is closer to the driver, but I find this gives better vision.
Works well with both soft and hard top, for both day and night. Gives great light! Two lights have individual switches, so the passenger can read without bothering driver's vision. Mine does not vibrate at any speed. I needed a wire tie to attach and control the extra wire. Highly recommended.
Lights come on when door is opened or by switches. The only minus, is that the lights cannot be turned off if a door is open. I have a '93 which has the interior lights at knee level.. The MM mirror is the next best interior accessory save a new shift knob. The switches are underneath the mirror and are not visible. The brightness of the lights is just right.
